Goa Dairy to launch basundi next month

PONDA: The Goa state milk producers' cooperative union, better known among milk consumers as Goa Dairy, will launch  it’s packaged ‘basundi’ next month.

The dairy's managing director NC Sawant said excess milk will be used to produce basundi during the flush seasons, "It will be launched before Ganesh Chaturthi, only the costing has to be finalised," he said.

The flush period of milk production in Goa is from October to MArch. During this period, milk production increases leadeing to a problem of marketing and the dairy board ahs decided to use this milk to produce basundi. In the lean period, the dairy would procure milk from othe dairies to make the product.

Sawant said teh dairy isn't investign in any huge machinery to start the basundi production line. Basundi will be sold in packets of 200 ml to 500 ml.

The dairy may consider packaging basundi in cups of the same in that case it will need to invest in a cup packaging machine, priced around Rs3-4 lakh, from the funds sanctioned by the National dairy development board (NDDB), the MD said.

The board recently received an instalment of Rs 7.91 crore of the Rs 16.41 crore sanctioned for its development and upgradation.A Maharashtra-based consultant is working on minimising the  cost of the product. At present, a kilogram of basundi costs around Rs 350, but the dairy is trying to lower the cost, a  a dairy manager Sanjay Shahane said.
