After the sharp rise in vegetable prices, milk rates are set to increase by up to ` 2 per litre.

Following the announcement of the Punjab State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation ( Milkfed), which sells milk under the brand name of Verka, to increase prices with effect from Saturday, other milk brands have followed suit. The Haryana Dairy Development Co-operative Federation Limited, which sells Vita milk, has decided to increase prices with effect from Sunday.

Full-cream milk and standard milk will be costlier by ` 2 and ` 1 per litre, respectively. However, there will be no change in the prices of double-tone and singletone milk.

The new rates will be applicable in Punjab, Haryana, Chandig arh and par ts of Himachal Pradesh.

An official of the Haryana federation said, “There are a number of factors leading to the hike, such as the increase in the procurement and transportation costs.”

This would be the second hike in milk prices in the past two months.

A Milkfed official said, “The demand for milk is greater than the supply. To meet the shortage, the cooperative is reconstituting milk from skimmed milk powder.”

From Saturday, Verka fullcream milk will cost ` 40 per litre (up from ` 38), while the price of standard milk will be ` 37 per litre (up from ` 36). The new Vita prices will be ` 40 per litre (full-cream milk) and ` 36 per litre (standard milk).
