Milk prices will rise by Rs 2 from July 1.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday approved the hike in government agencies' procurement price of milk. The price hike was recommended by a state committee set up in view of the drought. The committee considered the current rate at which milk is purchased and the production cost while recommending the hike. The increase will be implemented across the state. Officials said the procurement price was last hiked in 2013. Maharashtra ranks seventh in milk production in the country.

The procurement price for cow milk will go up from Rs 20 to Rs 22 a litre while buffalo milk will be purchased at Rs 31 as against Rs 29 a litre at present. Consequently, consumers will have to bear the Rs 2 hike in prices. Consumers will now have to pay Rs 35 a litre for cow milk and Rs 44 a litre for buffalo milk. Officials said the hike has been approved so that farmers dependent on sale of milk for a livelihood on account of the drought benefit. Amul recently hiked the price of milk in Delhi and Gujarat and is likely to do so in Maharashtra as well.
